Feb. 20, 2010	John Ward, Conservation Chairman & Board Member, 541-482-2859, e_john_ward@msn.com	Five RFF volunteers helped plant a thousand conifer and hardwood seedlings along a US Forest Service constructed side channel on Sucker Creek near Oregon Caves National Monument on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010. Ian Reid, USFS Fish Biologist said the side channel provided important off-channel spawning and rearing habitat for coho and other fish species last November and December. Willows and incense cedars will help stabilize the stream banks and improve canopy within a few years; maples and shrubs will add shade and erosion control more slowly. This work completed a multi-year restoration project in which deeply incised stream banks were pulled back and in-stream log and woven willow structures were put in place to create channel meanders for improving habitat for coho and steelhead. Jan. 14, 2010	John Ward 482-2859 e_john_ward@msn.com	Three RFF Board Members received a briefing on stream restoration and toured Middle Rogue Watershed Council's restoration sites with Dan Delany, Council Coordinator. Sites included the Louse Creek planting (see above), a second site several miles downstream, and a site on Quartz Creek where a concrete dam was breached to provide fish passage. It was concluded that the informative tour showed very promising restoration progress and it was learned that snorkeling surveys will monitor usage by juvenile fish. 10-22-09	Steve Haskell 541-482-9413	A small group of club members met with Dr. Pete Shroeder at the Holy Water on Thursday, October 22, 2009. The group sampled three different types of bug habitat at three different locations for a total of nine samples. In addition several samples of algae were taken. The "bugs" sorted out from the samples will be identified by SOU students and Dr. Shroeder will write up a report. The results will be reviewed by ODFW, the work group and givento the Board. Funding for this project was provided by Steve Haskell who sold used books on flyfishing to club members who in effect donated to the cause. October 3, 2009	John Ward 482-2859	The RFF volunteers at the Bear Creek Salmon Festival '09 held Saturday, Oct. 3 at North Mountain Park in Ashland taught casting and fly tying to festival attendees. This event occurred as part of the club's scheduled outing, set to occur during the salmonfly hatch. Jan 2008	Chuck Fustish (ODFW @ 541-826-8774)	Regarding monitoring fish traps, Chuck Fustish reports that recent cold weather has slowed juvenile fish migration in the small streams. Researchers from mountain states have proven that rainbow trout become inactive in cold weather (a long-held theory, but now proven). Also, in-stream food supplies are believed to be at their lowest this time of year. According to Chuck, fish traps are scheduled to be placed in streams on February 5th. Those who volunteered to monitor the fish traps will be contacted soon and given their monitoring schedule.	--------------------
Jan 26 & Feb 9, 2008	Lee Wedberg 541-826-3718	Roadside litter cleanup – RFF Adopt-A-Hwy project – was accomplished along Takelma Drive from Hwy 62 to the end of the pavement. It turned out to be a two-phase event. The original Jan 26th event was cancelled due to the weather (too much snow covering trash) but four people who didn’t get the cancellation notification showed up and it was decided to do a one-hour cleanup with Jack & Jan Rowe taking first prize with 25 lb of trash. For the Feb 9th event, nine volunteers took part in the cleanup work. Our sincere thanks and appreciation are extended to everyone who participated in this unpleasant but worthwhile event.
